Advent Wreath Growing up, holidays were steeped in tradition. In anticipation of Christmas, we had multiple advent calendars. In our entryway my parents hung a giant felt tree with numbered pockets. Each contained a felt ornament and a short story to help us foster the Christmas spirit in our family. Under the thermostat in the living room was another felt advent calendar: each night we would move a felt Mary and Joseph one step closer to Bethlehem. They would arrive on Christmas Eve and on Christmas morning we would find a felt Baby Jesus in the manger. One of my favorites was the advent wreath that would serve as a centerpiece for our dining table throughout the season. For the four Sundays preceding Christmas, we would light a new red candle each week. I loved measuring the time until Christmas by the length of the candles.
